Thales SelTrac™ product is a robust and modular signalling solution that allows urban rail operators to increase performance and capacity, whilst moving people safely. It provides a moving block technology for driverless operation that increases their revenue potential.

Unlike, other solutions, SelTrac™ does not require an additional fallback system and its integrated interlocking requires minimal equipment, leading to reduced life cycle costs. It can deliver revenue headways as low as sixty seconds, the shortest in the industry.

With the most extensive brownfield experience, Thales is the global leader for re-signalling projects. SelTrac™ has developed a unique continuous product life cycle extension approach where all its subsystems can be maintained and extended forever.

SelTrac™ latest developments place Thales at the forefront of the communication, cybersecurity, analytics, sustainability and metro autonomy topics.

The Latest Generation SelTrac™
Our world-leading driverless train control solution opens up new possibilities for metro operators.

WHAT'S NEW IN SELTRAC™ G8?

There are three important new features in SelTrac™ G8. The first is a new digital architecture. This is based on common hardware platforms and is designed to be upgraded easily, including our new object controller or Remote IO to reduce the amount of wayside equipment required. Secondly, we have our suite of enhanced services, to support operators to achieve maximum availability. Thirdly, and last but not least, SelTrac™G8 is autonomy ready.

HOW  WILL CUSTOMERS BENEFIT?

The beauty of SelTrac™ G8 is that it is permanently upgradeable. New functions can be added easily just by upgrading the software. We call this innovation insertion. SelTrac™ G8 also features advanced diagnostic and health monitoring tools, easing maintenance and boosting reliability. In addition to this, our customers benefit from a significant reduction in wayside equipment, so installation and maintenance costs are lower.

WHAT ABOUT THE ZONE CONTROLLER?

Our upgraded Zone Controller provides a number of different deployment and redundancy options. It is based upon the same proven hardware platform that may also be deployed as a standalone interlocking or as a subsytem in a legacy SelTrac™ system, depending on the installed software.

CAN I TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NEW COMMUNICATIONS, LIKE LTE AND 5G?

Yes. SelTrac™ G8 can support almost any type of radio communications, including LTE. Thanks to our new onboard communications gateway, you can switch between multiple radio technologies, so your train always stays connected. This new modular communication approach also supports 5G.

HOW IS CYBERSECURITY MANAGED?

Like all our solutions, SelTrac™ G8 is Cybersecured by Design. Innovation insertion makes security upgrades easier than ever. As we start to take advantage of new communications technologies, such as 5G, the focus on cybersecurity will become even more important.

WHAT DOES ‘‘AUTONOMY READY’’ MEAN?

We’ve developed a brand new autonomous positioning system in parallel with SelTrac™ G8. This uses inertial navigation, radar and radio ranging – the same technology stack that will be used in fully-autonomous operation. It’s remarkably easy to deploy. In fact, the onboard equipment can be installed in a few days. We have already piloted this on the New York City Subway and in Toronto.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM SELTRAC™ G8?

We’ve designed SelTrac™ G8 to meet the needs of all our customers. It can be used on urban rail, metro, light rail and people movers. And it can be deployed in both brownfield (resignalling lines) and greenfield (new lines) projects. Finally, customers with earlier versions of SelTrac™ can also benefit, because the G8 platform can be provided as an upgrade to their existing SelTrac™ systems.

SUPPORTING METRO
VANCOUVER'S LONG-TERM
TRANSIT VISION
Vancouver’s SkyTrain was the first driverless CBTC in the world. Vancouver has 4 lines equipped with SelTrac™ including; Expo Line completed in 1985, 21km Millenium Line completed in 2002, 19km Canada Line completed in 2009 and the Broadway Subway Project which is under construction. With fully automated Unattended Train Operations, SkyTrain has since become the backbone of the city’s metropolitan transit system and has extended seven times.

SelTrac™ equips 100 percent of the SkyTrain network and is an international reference for operators implementing a driverless CBTC system.

SUPPORTING NEW YORK
TRANSIT MODERNIZATION
Thales has been a strong, trusted partner of New York City and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA)/New York City Transit for more than 25 years. Thales was contracted to design and deploy a number of CBTC projects across NYC including; Queens Boulevard Line, Flushing Line, JFK Airport Line, R211 Train Control for the future Division B fleet and Culver Test Track.
In 2018 the MTA selected Thales as one of the winners for its Genius Transit Challenge and in 2018 developed a proof on concept. Next the MTA awarded Thales a contract for an Ultra Wide Band (UWB)-based train control system pilot program where a Next Generation Positioning System was deployed to collect shadow testing data. Continuing the partnership with MTA, Thales secured an option to its R211 contract + CBTC upgrade for the Crosstown Line in 2022.

MODERNISING THE
LONDON UNDERGROUND
To support the modernisation of London Underground, Thales is implementing SelTrac™ CBTC across the District, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines – four of London’s busiest routes.

The Four Lines Modernization covers 314km of track, 102 stations and 191 trains. In addition to the upgrade of; six sidings, five complex rail junctions, four depots and 16 existing control locations consolidated in to one new operational control centre (OCC), enabling significant cost reductions and operational efficiencies.

When the project is completed, the frequencyof trains during peak periods will increase to 32 trains per hour – a train every two minutes.

SUPPORTING CHINA'S
METRO EXPANSION
China is the world’s biggest urban rail market. It’s also one of the fastest growing, with 8,500 km of new lines planned in 40 cities. Thales is supporting this expansion through Thales SEC Transport (TST) – a joint venture with Shanghai Electric dedicated to urban rail signalling.

Since its foundation in 2010, TST has put more than 1,300km of lines into service with SelTrac™. A further six lines went into operation in 2021.

WINNING HEARTS & MINDS IN DUBAI
The Dubai Metro in the United Arab Emirates is the centrepiece of a successful programme to combat congestion and boost productivity in one of the world’s fastest-growing cities.

Thales implemented a complete technology package to deliver a world-class passenger experience: the solution includes SelTrac™ CBTC for reliable driverless operations, easy multimodal ticketing and passenger information. Wi-Fi is provided on trains, so passengers can make the most of their journeys.

In 2016, and for the same scope, the Dubai Metro has trusted Thales to expand further its network in order to welcome the Universal Exposition in 2020.

RE-SIGNALLING PROJECT
Upgrading metro performance
Everyday the North South and East West (NSEW) carry two thirds of the Singaporean commuters (5.6 million population) on 100km+ of lines, across 58 stations. NSEW is a complete turn-key project for signalling and rollingstock retrofit, transforming existing trains from conventional to CBTC signalling. From the contract award in 2012, Thales delivered operational lines in less than 6.5 years. The project involved migrating over an operating railway which had been running over 30 years with a legacy signaling system without any major service disruptions.

CONTRIBUTING TO NATIONAL VISION 2030
1st Three lines of Doha Metro
Doha Metro serves the capital and suburbs with 40 stations, along 3 lines with 75 trains operating automatically on 76km of track. The Red, Gold and Green lines opened in 2019, with over 50 million passengers since the launch.

Capable of reaching 100km/h, Doha Metro is one of the fastest driverless trains in the world.

Thales has implemented the heart of the infrastructure, integrating its full range of telecommunication, supervision, security and ticketing systems, including a fully driverless CBTC system.
